An avid horticulturalist, he was among the first to denounce deforestation in the Amazon region; he also discovered over thirty species of Brazilian flora, which bear his name.  
 
This beautifully illustrated and groundbreaking publication covers the full range of Burle Marx’s artistic output, as well as his remarkable home, an abandoned estate that he transformed into his office, workshop, gallery, and living space. An absolute masterpiece of a complete artist

This is definetily one of the best Burle Marx`s books of all time. It covers all his history with plenty of photos, text and descriptions that will make you travel through time and space. I`m a Brazilian Passionate lover of this complete artist. I have many books about his works, but If you are looking for one book that will cover it all, with sense and essence, this is the one.

Michael F. Bird (Ph.D., University of Queensland) is lecturer in theology at Crossway College and honorary research associate at the University of Queensland in Australia. He is the author of Jesus and the Origins of the Gentile Mission and The Saving Righteousness of God: Studies on Paul, Justification, and the New Perspective. He is also co-moderator of the New Testament blog "Euangelion."

Succinct Survey of the Sources

It is known that early Christianity (1) was a sect of Judaism; and (2) had a strong emphasis on evangelism from the beginning. This raises a question: Did Christianity inherit its evangelistic emphasis from Judaism, or was this emphasis a trait that distinguished Christianity from the rest of Judaism?

Bird's book gives a succinct survey of the relevant ancient sources and also summarizes today's scholarly discussion on this question. Largely in agreement with Scot McKnight and Martin Goodman, Bird concludes that first-century Judaism (1)defended itself in the ancient marketplace of ideas; (2) was open to Gentile converts; but (3) didn't have an organized "missionary" outreach to the pagan world.

At the end of the book, Bird hints that Christianity's distinctive emphasis on evangelism can be attributed to the teachings of Jesus and its conviction, based on those teachings, that the time had come for the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies about the nations joining Israel in the eschatological kingdom of God.

The book includes a convenient "sourcebook" of relevant quotes from primary sources like Josephus, Philo, the Talmud, Greco-Roman writers, and the New Testament.

Zero is what it deserves

This book was over the top confusing & horrible. Treasure used to be a good writer, but she fell off with this book! It was rushed & it doesn't make sense, the ending was stupid as hell & I won't be reading part 2.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm such a fan of Treasure's. I loved the relationship between Nori & Mare, its true he belonged to someone else, but Nori had all of him without a title. He was in a relationship with another chick but Nori never played second to her since the day they met. I loved how he was there for her even when she didn't want him to. Halo, she's definitely a true friend. Nori's dad, the ish he said to her was crazy. The whole Cassie & Kadeem situation, had a feeling them meeting wasn't random. Can't believe Mare backtracked smh. Yo, that ending.... Wish Nori would've trusted her gut instinct. That ending makes the want for part two so intense!! BTW, all the songs & quotes you used for each chapter was life!!

Good story, but that ending though?

I liked the flow of the story as well as the characters. Halo was the true definition of a friend. Nori was dealt a bad hand from the beginning and it just got worse. Amare started out as the perfect guy, but he showed his true colors when he backtracked and missed his daughter's birth. The ending is what got me confused. It could only be 1 of 2 people. Either way you look at it, it looks like part 2 will be a tear jerker. I'm hoping it's neither of them, but it HAS to be one of them. Hope part 2 is around the corner. I knew James was a traitor.

If you are into juicy gossip and explicit sex stories, or love Khanyi Mbau - buy this book

Khanyi Mbau, the notorious South African socialite, bling queen gold digger and diva who is not afraid of expressing herself, no matter how many people she offends. However, behind that is strong willed, go getter who is not afraid to get what she wants. At age 19 she got involved with wealthy millionaire, Mandla Mthembu. He's twice her age and when she got pregnant, they got married in a traditional Zulu ceremony. They looked happy, spending their days and nights spending money and going on vacations. Behind the facade was tumultuous relationship, ignited even further when they discover that their unborn child was a girl, not the son he wished for. That story and more in the book.

The story was shallow, bland and not as in depth as hoped for. It's more like a giant tabloid news article..but makes a good read if you are into gossip or a Khanyi Mbau fan. I didn't love it or hate it, so hence the "average" rating

Finished it in 24 hrs very interesting read for a biography didn't want to put it down. It's good to hear every side of the story.

Lots of Quantity Here But...

Loved the cover and concept of this cookbook but the recipes were a disappointment. Most of them seemed bland and boring, very simplistic, a lot had little or no seasonings...

There may be a lot of recipes to chose from here, but I'm wondering how much thought and testing actually went into each one. I'll pick quality over quantity any day, when it comes to choosing a recipe collection to use and enjoy again and again. This one did not fit that criteria at all.

an odd book

This book contains some nice recipes and many variations on vegan standards. The instructions for many of the recipes are misleading for inexperienced vegan cooks. For example, 30 minutes of soaking time is not enough for almonds to be used in cheese. Just sayin'.

The writing style is odd, with phrasing not normally found in cookbooks..."position the ingredients in the food processor..." Huh? And putting "enjoy!" at the end of most of the recipes is silly.

With some good editing, this might be a reasonably good cookbook. As it is, it makes me glad for that Kindle "delete from device" option.

This one's a NO...

This book is a compilation of recipes, likely collected from the internet, with one of those auto-written introductions. I would assume the author used an "article spinner" or similar software to do most of the writing & pass CopySpace.The words and phrasing is barely sensible in many places, and not at all written as though well-thought out or edited.

That saddens me,as I love a good vegan cookbook.

After checking out the author's other work, however, I'm inclined to doubt she (or he) is a vegan at all. Capitalizing on the trend, I'd guess. Such is the free market.

My recommendation: Save your 99 cents for a better cookbook, written by someone who cares about our lifestyle.

Being a fan of Kafka's work as well as Roth, I was intrigued by this quite bizarre concept. As I read the book it not only reminded me of Kafka's "Metamorphisis", but it also brought to mind Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" with its theme of the loss of self.

This book is designed to be somewhat of a parody of "Metamorphisis", yet it takes Kafka's story from a different angle. While Kafka's story focuses on a general theme of isolation and loneliness, Roth further develops his recurring character Robert Kepesh's sense of sexual frustration. Along the way, Kepesh struggles with whether he really is a breast while being visited by Claire, his father, and a less than sympathetic colleague. With these visits, he tries to accomodate his new status with continuing a normal life. Yet we never seem to grasp the motive or reason for Kepesh's change.

"The Breast" is certainly a strange work in the scope of Philip Roth's writing. Many who enjoy his other works may be repulsed by the image of this book. While it is certainly not a recognized as some of this other writings, I believe it is near the pinnacle of his list of works.

"It Began Oddly"

"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect."
- opening sentence of "The Metamorphosis," by Franz Kafka Gregor had it easy compared to Professor David Kepesh, a college professor who wakes up one morning to find he has been transformed into a gigantic breast, in Philip Roth's aptly-titled "The Breast."
"It began oddly," Roth starts the 89-page book, and from the opening sentence readers are plunged into the new world of Kepesh.
Refreshingly enough, Roth refrains from turning "The Breast" into an extended pornographic joke. Instead, he spends his time exploring David's state of mind- how would you feel if you suddenly transformed into a giant mammary gland?- which makes for an interesting psychological drama.
First, David describes the experience of being a breast as though he does not quite believe it himself: Is it all a dream? How is he able to communicate with the others around him? Where'd his face go?
Later, David's mentality changes, first to a perverted interest in a female nurse who washes him, then utter paranoia that he is under constant surveillance while in his hospital room, and finally a blatant refusal to accept his condition and the belief that he has gone mad.
Things degenerate to the point where Kepesh believes he cannot hear his doctors' actual diagnoses; because of his "insanity" he only hears what he wants to hear.
Throughout all this, we see how David's wife, Claire, deals with her husband's new state, as well as the reactions from his father, his doctors and nurses, and his mentor, who collapses in giggles at the sight of David the Breast.
"The Breast" is one big fat Franz Kafka admiration camp, where all the questions about
"The Metamorphosis" apply. Is David really a breast? Or is he mentally insane? Is he really being watched?
But the Kafka homage doesn't end there. Kepesh mentions strained relations with his father. Gregor's daddy wasn't a picnic either. Kepesh also calls the two hairs growing from his nipple his "antennae."
At one point, David even comments that most of the characters' names begin with the letter "K".
To which his doctor, Dr. Klinger, replies, "The alphabet only has twenty-six letters. And there are four billion of us in need of initials for purposes of identification."
It's a smart book, one's that's certainly different from the usual literary offerings. It's certainly a concept film director Spike Jonze should contemplate following "Being John Malkovich" up with.
It's a wild, short ride of a tale and one worth taking just for the sheer spectacle of it all.

Identifying with the absurd

What should David Kepesh make of the fact that he's been transformed into a human breast? That's the premise of this Kafkaesque short novel (perhaps better thought of as a long short story). And of course as Kepesh deals with his own identity crisis (after the to-be-expected "why me!?" outburst, he questions the nature of reality, thinks he might just be insane, and finally is forced to face the fact that he indeed is a breast), other characters must deal with his transformation as well. Some of the most humorous scenes involve his academic colleague sending him tapes of "Hamlet" and his father acting as if his son is just suffering from a temporary illness. Although carrying it too far into the extreme, Roth's point in the book is that nothing in life is a sure bet, and that the totally absurd often becomes one's reality and must be accepted as such. Point well taken, but as a novel there isn't much else going on besides Kepesh accepting and internalizing this single idea, which makes it better thought of as a short story. Good, but not a major Roth achievement.
