A Good Introduction to Photography for Beginners

Blake's first e-book on high dynamic range photography, to a large extent, mirrored the content that he posts on his everydayhdr.com website. In this second e-book, he takes a step back from the post-processing side of image capture and (instead) talks through the more elementary nuts and bolts of photography--composition, exposure, how a camera works, how to deal with lighting. For those people that are just starting out with their first dSLR and who might be intimidated by either the owner's manual that came with the camera or the complexity of the camera itself, this book can a useful way to de-mystify their camera and to talk about somewhat complicated concepts--such as metering--in plain, accessible English with several real life examples to illustrate the concept. It's not so much a replacement for the owner's manual (since Blake points out that the owner's manual is important since it's specific to a camera) as it is a supplement to it.

Some minor quibbles: I read the book on a 7 inch Google Nexus tablet, and because of the smaller screen size (compared to a computer monitor, for example), some of the photographic examples were too small to be of much use, particularly when it comes to dealing with focusing or noise. On a seven inch tablet, the amount of noise on an images taken with a low ISO setting, for example, looks about the same as the amount of noise at a high ISO setting. An example at 100% crop might help in this instance. Reading the book on a larger screen would also help.

Finally, the section on post-processing is helpful insofar as it gets beginners starting to think about how to treat their out-of-camera images as a starting point rather than an end result. However, it is (by necessity) quite brief and, for those readers that are simply starting to figure out their camera, it introduces concepts without providing the simple step-by-step instructions that readers at an introductory level would require in order to put these concepts to practical use.

Again, in closing, I want to emphasize that these criticisms are minor. For the most part, this book can be a very valuable resource to new dSLR photographers.

√ Post-Processing Software is Absolutely Essential!

This is a thorough introduction to using your digital SLR camera. There are tons of useful tips, like the one in the title above. I had no idea that one should be using post-processing software. The author gives an entire chapter to it (Chapter 11), and says, "I will not even show my wife my pictures until I have taken them to the next level with my post processing software."

The author speaks from experience, and gives a ton of useful ideas. Let his experience save you a lot of trouble. Are you an expert on perspective? How 'bout how to properly do "Framing?" Do you know what the "Composition Triangle" is? If not, get this book and get started!

♦ Good illustrations, such as the "Use the rule of Thirds" artwork.
♦ Good discussion of the "Exposure Triangle" of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
♦ Nice chart showing the "reciprocity" principle. I had never seen this.

Yes! There is a surprising bonus--"Building a Personal Survival Kit." The author calls this your "very cheap, one-time purchase insurance policy." Some really good ideas for what to store.

How To Say It: Creating Complete Customer Satisfaction

This book is about how to sell and keep customers satisfied. It is a thorough book going through the sales process all the way through handling with customer complaints about your product. It also has lists of suggested words to use and words to stay away from which can be a great help to those who are writing marketing material.

I find the book to be a great reference for anyone whether you would consider yourself in sales not. Even person at the customer service desk in a retail store can learn a great deal from this book.

I think the most important point that anyone can take from this text is to take care of your customer. While this seems obvious I run into many companies that forget this fundamental lesson. If each person who reads this book can grasp this one lesson along with the concepts presented you can win in business.

There were two things that annoyed me in this book. One was the typos at the start that gave me a bad impression of the book at first. This does go away rather quickly so don't let it turn you off from reading it as it seems confined to the first section or so.

The second thing were the examples. There was not a consistent theme with the example letters and e-mails. The "company" name changed a few time and the format of the examples changed. While it doesn't make anything away from what the book is trying to teach it does get a little aggravating at the back and forth between the changes. It would be easier for people to learn the material if there were more consistency in this area.

As a whole I would recommend anyone who works one on one with customers to read and absorb this book. You will get a lot out of it.

The What and the How

What we say and how we say it makes customers like and trust us or not. This book attempts to address the what and the how.

The introduction explains that the book is about "seeing the customers point of view". Address the customers' needs and wants.

I was surprised to see almost the first half of the book devoted to selling - the process and the language. I suppose I should not have been surprised at this since customer service is so linked to sales. I liked the focus the book has on words including a list of good words to use like advise, act, direct, discerning, valuable, help me, savvy, we listen etc etc.

I liked the final chapter "Welcome All Complaints" (Essentially they are opportunities to prove how good you are and they allow companies to continually improve).

It is a good book for anyone in sales or dealing with customers.

About the Author
Linda Fairstein is one of America’s foremost legal experts on violent crimes against women and children, and a former chief of the Manhattan District Attorney’s pioneering Special Victims Bureau. She developed many of the techniques that have revolutionized the prosecution of sexual predators, including her early introduction of DNA as a forensic tool. Fairstein is also the author of an internationally bestselling series of crime novels featuring her fictional alter ego, Alex Cooper. Linda Fairstein knows a lot about crime, she committed one against 5 innocent teenagers

I'm not sure that I would read any of her books. But then again, they probably have a wealth of information on total deception committing any crime. No doubt, she would know. This book, in particular, might be fascinating because Linda Fairstein and Elizabeth Lederer prosecuted and convicted five innocent teenagers (with no prior arrest records) ... for a rape they didn't commit. They were not in a "pack"/"wilding" as claimed, and were overwhelmingly proven innocent through DNA - exonerating all five of them - after spending full sentences (one teenager in an adult prison - Rikers...).

The real "serial rapist" continued to rape until being arrested because Ms Fairstein & Ms Lederer were too busy using this horrific lie to feed their new found fame/careers . The serial rapist, Matias Reyes, confessed- and his DNA proved that he committed this crime alone ... Additional supporting evidence proved beyond a doubt there were only two people at the scene of the crime, the victim and the assailant, Matias Reys ... not the Central Park Five.

Through coerced confessions by a corrupt and eager justice system, these young men... with no priors... suffered unimaginable horror for years to come. Sarah Burns, along with her father Ken Burns have released an award winning non-sensational accurate documentary illustrating the "vanity of bonfires"/ media hysteria that almost destroyed five innocent lives led by this ... "crime novelist" and her fiend in crime - Elizabeth Lederer (now teaching at Columbia School of Law).

No doubt, Linda Fairstein should be a genius in the area of serial rapists, and those who perpetrate crimes against others - for Elizabeth Lederer, the justice system, and many others (like Donald Trump & the NY Post) are the true criminals, not the Central Park Five. They (Fairstein, Lederer, and their clonies) should be tried, prosecuted, and convicted as such.

Thank goodness for Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and some honest detectives, attorneys, and media who came forward to question an terrible injustice.
