Facilitating Learning with the Adult Brain in Mind: A Conceptual and Practical Guide, by Kathleen Taylor, Catherine Marienau

Practical "brain-aware" facilitation tailored to the adult brain

Facilitating Learning with the Adult Brain in Mind explains how the brain works, and how to help adults learn, develop, and perform more effectively in various settings. Recent neurobiological discoveries have challenged long-held assumptions that logical, rational thought is the preeminent approach to knowing. Rather, feelings and emotions are essential for meaningful learning to occur in the embodied brain. Using stories, metaphors, and engaging illustrations to illuminate technical ideas, Taylor and Marienau synthesize relevant trends in neuroscience, cognitive science, and philosophy of mind. Readers unfamiliar with current brain discoveries will enjoy an informative, easy-to-read book. Neuroscience fans will find additional material designed to supplement their knowledge.

Many popular publications on brain and learning focus on school-aged learners or tend more toward anatomical description than practical application. This book provides facilitators of adult learning and development a much-needed resource of tested approaches plus the science behind their effectiveness.

  • Appreciate the fundamental role of experience in adult learning
  • Understand how metaphor and analogy spark curiosity and creativity
  • Alleviate adult anxieties that impede learning
  • Acquire tools and approaches that foster adult learning and development

Compared with other books on brain and learning, this volume includes dozens of specific examples of how experienced practitioners facilitate meaningful learning. From the Back Cover

PRACTICAL "BRAIN-AWARE" APPROACHES FOR HELPING ADULTS LEARN AND DEVELOP

"Brain-aware facilitation seemed likely to contribute to the very kind of learning that enable adults to make more informed choices and act in more deliberate and impactful ways. Learning about how the adult brain learns underscores the role that we and other practitioners can play in fostering these developmental outcomes both for individuals and toward the greater social good."
—From the Preface

"The educational implications of current brain research are often over-hyped and over-generalized. Synthesizing contributions from colleagues around the globe with foundational theories of adult learning, Taylor and Marienau offer dozens of examples of brain-aware approaches to practice that can be adopted and adapted for the multitude of settings—workplace and academic, formal and informal—where adult learning happens."
—David A. Kolb, founder & chairman of Experience Based Learning Systems, Inc.; author, Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development, 2nd ed.; creator of the Kolb Learning Styles Inventory

"The workings of the brain, and the connections between brain chemistry and adult learning, have long been missing from the literature of adult education. So many assertions about what conditions best foster learning are based on anecdotal evidence or broad generalizations drawn from the theory of the day. In this groundbreaking book the authors take us skillfully and creatively on a journey through the construction of 'brain aware' approaches to support adult learning. Although the topic is complex the text is written clearly and accessibly. Facilitating Learning with the Adult Brain in Mind is a must read for anyone interested in facilitating adult learning."
—Stephen D. Brookfield, John Ireland Endowed Chair, University of St. Thomas, and author, Powerful Techniques for Teaching Adults

"Historically, once we, as facilitators, enter the theatre of adult learning and the houselights fade to dark, we have found it challenging to gauge what truly transpires behind the fixed faces of our adult audiences in our attempts to perform miracles of learning transfer. Mystery no more, as authors Marienau and Taylor use the latest insights of neuroscience to lift the curtain at long last and reveal which facilitation techniques work—and why— leading to real adult learning moments. WARNING: This book both validates and verifies; be prepared to leave your assumptions at the stage door."
—Trish Uhl, CPLP, Learning Transformation Leader at Owl's Ledge

i HAD TO WAIT 40 YEARS TO READ THIS BOOK
By Ron Stadsklev
Back in the 1970s I was director of experiential learning at the institute of research at the University of Alabama " I thought that the old Chinese proverb said it so well..". I hear and I forget..I see and Remember..I do and Understand. " I had listed 32 observation that tend to support experiential learning. And Garry Shirts another pioneer in the development of experiential learning listed 12 hunches about Simulations games as educational tools. But science calls this anecdotal evidence. (doesn't prove anything)
Except the fact that results showed over and over that it WORKED.

Now 40 years later this well written, informative book presents conclusive evidence that confirms what us early pioneers believed. Experience is the best teacher
What a pleasure I get from reading this book

Supporting and Challenging Adult Educators
By Dean Elias
A conceptual and practical guide, in deed: this is a brilliant collection and integration of the stuff that was trained out of us educators, a delightful counterpoint to Descartes (I feel, therefore I am), and one of the few sources that brings forward the majestic work of John Heron. . . I love it, and have gifted many of my colleagues with the book (and I hope, its wisdom). The book supports us with conceptual framing and abundant practical tools, and challenges us to educate the whole persons of our students. Thanks to both of you for this act of "conceptual and practical" leadership. . . Dean

By Cynthia R Stevens
I have been anticipating the release of this book. From page 1 and on, I am not disappointed.
The book is packed with information and contains valuable insight from practitioners. As a professor I am drawn to the chapter endings that give a "Pause for Reflection" that allows me to make connections to my own practice. Throughout the book I was impressed to see "Key Ideas' and "Further Reading" sections that are wonderful lists of information.
I know I will use this book as a resource and I anticipate bringing it into graduate level courses in adult education that I teach.

Eye Opening and Stereotype Shattering
By Gabby
I am a pre-service teacher with an endorsement in special education. Even after being in the program for so long, this book was eye opening, truly. It's very easy to read, and offers a large array of points of views in the chapters, along with resources to strengthen understanding. I considered myself a very progressive person in terms of people with disabilities, and reading this book made me realize that some of the beliefs and things that I say and do are not as "progressive" as I think they are. They were just reinforcing stereotypes that I had never even thought of. I really feel like I will be not only a better teacher because of this book, but a better person.

Informative and Full of Ideas
By K.A.Goldberg
This is an excellent guide for Special Educators, regular classroom teachers, and anybody with an interest in helping kids learn. Using nicely readable prose, the authors provide many useful insights into education, helping students with special needs, and the oft-prejudicial views of both society and even some educators. The authors also provide a host of modifications, adaptations, lesson plans, and useful ideas for both special education and classroom teachers. Their upbeat manner inspires without ignoring the challenges that perplex even the most capable teachers. I'd have liked more insight on making connections with those hardest-to-reach students, another perplexing challenge. Still, this is an excellent guide for current and future teachers, plus anybody interested in the future of education. We recently read this book in a college class and almost everybody liked its upbeat ideas and realistic approach.

I am studying to become a special educator and this book literally changed my life by forever and profoundly deepening my perspective on persons with disabilities.

Back Beneath The Dark Ice ...
By J. Buckley
My one and only complaint with Greig Beck's debut, "Beneath The Dark Ice," was that his characters were given insufficient time to explore the strange world the protagonists discovered miles beneath the Antarctic ice. Of course, they were being pursued by a monstrous cephalopod at the time, so I guess that can be excused.
However, in this long-awaited sequel to that novel, Beck more than rectifies that situation, giving readers (and his super solder Alex Hunter) plenty of time to appreciate the mysterious primordial world beneath the ice caps. Of course, they're still having to deal with the aforementioned monstrous cephalopod, but hey I'll take what I can get!
On a more serious note, this is another exciting installment in Beck's "Arcadian' series. In this novel, Hunter, a Special Forces operative granted nearly super-human powers through a strange series of events, is once again thrust into a precarious situation. Scientists in Antartica have picked up signals from an experimental U.S. submarine that disappeared in 2008. However, Chinese forces also pick up the signal, and thus begins a race to reclaim the lost sub. As Hunter and his crew find themselves back in the world beneath the dark ice, they must deal with not only with the predatory nemesis from the first novel, but also a team of genetically enhanced Chinese super soldiers determined to find the sub before the Americans. Above ground, cold war tensions threaten to go hot as leaders from both sides await the results of the subterranean struggle.
Beck is firing on all literary cylinders in this novel. There is plenty of interesting character development (particularly in respect to the Arcadian), and also plenty of exciting glimpses of the Pellucidarian world beneath the ice. Add in generous amounts of pulse-pounding action, and you have yet another noteworthy installment in this series. Beck continues to serve as a reliable brand name for fast-paced adventure, combining all the best elements of military fiction, horror, and sci-fi into one easily digestible package. Now I can't wait for the seventh book in this fun series!

Excellent, but still the third best Alex Hunter book!
By Doc
Beck has had a winner in the Alex Hunter franchise for years. First, you must read him. Second, read the Hunter books in order. Third, let me know if you diasgree that Beneath the Ice and Black Mountain edge this book out for best in the series. Beck again shows the ability to make your skin crawl, to astound you with science that appears to support his books and providing terrifying battle sequences, along with unforgettable characters, both good and evil. This book ends with a natural seque to book 7 and I want to see it ASAP! Long live Beck and Alex Hunter!

Military horror at its absolute finest!
By Matthew Summers
The Arcadian returns to the dark ice in a reprisal of one of his first and most deadly missions. But this time the stakes couldn't be higher.

In 2008, a top secret US submarine went missing on its test voyage off the coast of Antarctica. After years silent, its emergency beacon is suddenly activated, but strangely, the beacon is emanating from a point miles below the ice sheets of the frozen continent.

The race is on. The Chinese government, alerted at the same time as the Americans, is after the submarine's secrets. And the Americans need to retrieve their technology, quickly and quietly, from a place now marked as an international forbidden zone.

With the reluctant assistance of petrobiologist Aimee Weir, Alex Hunter and his team of HAWCs return to the location of their first mission together.

But only a few members of the team know the truth. A treacherous horror lies in wait for them, deep beneath the Antarctic ice.

When I first heard that Beck was returning to the world that he had explored so well in Beneath the Dark Ice I was initially skeptical. Why would he go down that path again? Would he do it justice? Or was Kraken Rising doomed to fail from the start. Well, after ripping through it in one sitting (and annoying my wife by keeping my bedside light on until the early hours of the morning) I can safely say the following.

Kraken Rising is Beck's best work yet.. and the Arcadian is back.

HELL YEAH!!!

I loved absolutely everything in this book, from it's off the hook action sequences and spine tingling encounters right through to the moments of pure primordial terror. Kraken Rising not only hits all of the markers for a great action story, it also scares the living hell out of you as you read. One of Beck's greatest skills as a writer is his ability to explore our greatest fears and to build suspense. The further I got into Kraken Rising the higher the stakes got, and at one stage I had to put the book down for a minute just to take a breather from the insane and terrifying encounters with the monster (a gigantic and super intelligent cephalopod/orthocone with a taste for humans). Add to this mix the threat of nuclear war, and a showdown between the navies of the United States and China off Antartica, and you have the recipe for what is simply an amazing story. The military hardware and tech that was also explored in Kraken Rising blew my mind. Super soldiers, genetic engineering, body armour that would make Tony Stark jealous, advanced weaponry, and secret submarines all leap out from the pages as you read, and make Kraken Rising even more addictive and explosive (one particular scene where the monster assaults a Chinese naval vessel was just INSANE). What makes this book unforgettable however is Alex Hunter. The Arcadian. The original super soldier. The best. How Beck has handled his evolution over this series has been nothing short of impressive, and I adored the subtle nuances and layers to his character that have slowly started to appear and come to prominence throughout the last few books (having a child, dealing with the psychotic side of his mind, etc). His showdown with the monster reminded me of Brody taking on the shark in Jaws, or Dutch facing off against the Predator. It had that same level of excitement, tension, and awesomeness. All in all this story gripped me from the opening page and just refused to let go. And now, days afterwards, I'm still googling about things Beck mentions throughout the book (sightings of giant squids, fossils, boats and planes going missing with no trace, strange sounds heard from the depths, etc). That's how much of an impact it had.

Kraken Rising is military horror at its absolute finest, and I would recommended it to anyone with a heartbeat and a functioning brain!

5 out of 5 stars.

Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture, by Trevor Kelley, Leslie Simon

What is emo? For starters it's a form of melodic, confessional, or EMOtional punk rock. But emo is more than a genre of music–it's the defining counterculture movement of the '00s. EVERYBODY HURTS is a reference book for emo, tracing its angsty roots all the way from Shakespeare to Holden Caufield to today's most popular bands.

There's nothing new about that perfect chocolate and peanut butter combination––teenagers and angst. What is new is that emo is the first cultural movement born on the internet. With the development of early social networking sites like Make Out Club (whose mission is to unite "like–minded nerds, loners, indie rockers, record collectors, video gamers, hardcore kids, and artists through friendship, music, and sometimes even love") outcast teens had a place to find each other and share their pain, their opinions, and above all, their music–which wasn't available for sale at the local record store.

Authors Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley lead the reader through the world of emo including its ideology, music, and fashion, as well as its influences on film, television, and literature. With a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm, EVERYBODY HURTS uses diagrams, illustrations, timelines, and step–by–step instructions to help the reader successfully achieve the ultimate emo lifestyle. Or, alternately, teach him to spot an emo kid across the mall in order to mock him mercilessly.

From Publishers Weekly
For those who equate "emo" with lonely, malnourished rock bands, Alternative Press vets Simon and Kelley provide a vivisection of this deceptively large slice of the American pop culture pie: "it's a state of mind...a place for people who don't fit in-but who long to fit in with other people who don't fit in." With casual prose and unflagging energy, the authors look at a laundry list of emo affairs: fashion, internet, film, literature and music among them. Simon and Kelley know the territory inside and out, profiling ten emo types ("Trustafarian," "Christian," "Ex-Hardcore"), "emo ancestors" (including Emily Dickinson and Cameron Crowe), a detailed timeline and a comparative " 'Emo' vs. 'So Not Emo' " list-and that's just the first chapter. Unexpected resources and sarcastic swipes abound: record store recommendations segue into clever, cutting guidelines for naming your band. Readers will be reminded of Robert Lanham's The Hipster Handbook (right down to Rob Dobi's detailed, comic-realist illustrations), but like that title, Simon and Kelley's may not appeal to its subjects (emo fans read books primarily "to brag about them in social situations"). On the other hand, would-be scenesters will pick up plenty of tips-though there's a significant possibility that the info here will be dated in six months.

From Booklist
Simon and Kelley describe emo culture slyly in this perky lifestyle guide. Basically, emo is music made by "a bunch of guys barely out of high school" who are concerned "with decidedly high school problems" (heartbreak, friendship, etc.) more than with "approachable hooks." Growing out of and away from increasingly insular punk rock, emo sets lyrics that are very often introspective and achey. Self-centered, whiny songs and introspective posing have been part of rock from the beginning (e.g., "Tell Laura I Love Her," Jim Morrison's tortured-artist act), but with emo they are the center of a packaged subculture pitched to "the preppiest of preps" being "punkish," "lacrosse jocks" who sing along to "weepy acoustic anthems," and "Long Island dudes" who "keep journals, cry in front of girls, and write the word art with a capital A." Simon and Kelley list movies, songs, fashions, and even eating habits to reveal what is and isn't emo. There's a hint of satire in all this, which seems right, given the arch irony of the emo mind-set. Mike Tribby

Superb
By B. Bickel
This really is the perfect book for anyone looking to know a little more about what it means "to be emo" but its even better for people who already know the scene and just want a good chuckle. The book is a perfect blend of information and comedy, making a nice satirical music book.

sometimes witty, but ultimately too smug
By Mark Oestreicher
ok, short review. i've been amazed by how the almost-impossible-to-define music genre of emo has proliferated and splintered into dozens of even-more-impossible-to-define subsets and nuances over the past few years. and how emo has become more mainstream, and -- surely -- the haven of the hip white kids. let the truly mainstream have their r&b and hip-hop and top-40. emo, like it's "alternative rock" predecessor, is in the midst of an identity crisis as it's growing popularity is antithetical to its "we're the forgotten" anti-conformity soul.

i admit, i'm a 45 year old dude. i am not allowed to be emo (though it is hilarious that my 14 year-old daughter has recently moved beyond her hip-hop and r&b only musical tastes and raided most of the emo from my itunes, causing a shudder in the generation gap of our household).

i bought this book because i wanted to understand more, and because i thought it looked like fun. and in some ways it provided both. in other ways, it was just too self-effacing and "i'm more hip than you because i make fun of the very affinity group i am part of". a few insights; too many lists of "the right record stores", "the right clothing stores" and such. worth a skim if you're interested in the subject; but not a high recommendation.

I finished this book in 3-4 hours. Totally hilarious! It had me cracking up every couple of pages, and I totally agree with the thing about wearing belts so that the buckle is on the side, rather than the front of your pants. AWESOME!!!

How different would Americans lives be if they had guaranteed access to health care, generous public pensions, paid family leave, high-quality public pre-school care, increased rights at work, and a greater say in how corporations are run? This one-of-a-kind book emphasizes that differences in policies and institutions affect the lives of citizens by comparing health, pension, and family policies, as well as labor markets and corporate governance in the United States, Sweden, and Germany. Demonstrating that the US model of capitalism is not the only one that is viable, Bowman encourages students not only to rethink their assumptions about what policy alternatives are feasible, but also to learn more about American capitalism through insightful contrast. Covering a wide range of policy areas and written in a crisp, engaging style, Capitalisms Compared is a perfect companion for courses in political economy and public policy.

Review
"The comparisons between the U.S., Sweden, and Germany, which retain great analytical clarity and sophistication throughout, are superbly structured. The detail on recent policy reform, in chapters such as pensions or the labor market, are an especially welcome component which has no real competitor text. The fact is that you cannot find any other book that is as comprehensive in making structured public policy comparisons to understand the rich variety of capitalistic models that the modern world economy is capable of producing." -- Jeffery Lewis "Capitalisms Compared provides, in a single source, an accessible, effective, and productive comparative analysis of the character and practical operation of different types of capitalism and, in so doing, details the main insights of the field of political economy and thereby addresses a noteworthy deficiency that currently plagues the extant scholarship. John Bowman has developed a text that is at the forefront of its genre. I would strongly recommend it not only to teachers of comparative public policy and political economy, but also to anyone interested in gaining a sound understanding of the field." -- Shaun Young "I am quite impressed by the individual chapters on policy areas and countries, in their accessible and readable treatment of the subject, rich examples, and the right amount of detail. They reflect solid research and expert knowledge, especially in reference to the relevant empirical data and history of each of the three welfare states." -- Tomasz Inglot

Whatever Mother Says...: A True Story of a Mother, Madness and Murder (St. Martin's True Crime Library), by Wensley Clarkson

To neighbors, she was the brave single mother...

Raising her five kids alone in a rundown section of Sacramento, Theresa Cross Knorr seemed like the ultimate survivor. But her youngest daughter, 16-year-old Terry, told police another story: one almost too terrible to believe.

But accused of imprisoning her children in a house of horrors...

According to Terry, Theresa--no longer the petite brunette she once was--had turned insanely jealous of her pretty eldest daughters and enlisted the help of her two teenaged sons in a vicious campaign against their sisters.

Of beating, torturing and killing her own flesh and blood...

Terry's gruesome tale told how Theresa had drugged, handcuffed and shot 16-year-old Suesan, allowing her wounds to fester, until the day she ordered her sons to burn their sister alive. Next, Terry said Theresa severely beat 20-year-old Sheila and then locked her in a stifling broom closet, so that when the girl finally starved to death, her brothers dumped her body in the same desolate mountain range where they had cremated Suesan.

She could be one of the most evil murderesses of our time...

It took Terry five agonizing years to convince authorities to investigate her grisly accounts of burning flesh, starvation and torture...of a mother from hell, so sadistic and so deranged, she had become her children's own executioner.

Wensley Clarkson Whatever Mother Says ... is the true story of a mother, madness and murder.

Very sad,made me cry
By Ellen
I read this book a couple of years ago under another title which I think was called The Worst Mother In The World. This is the only true crime book that I have ever read that actually made me cry.I consider myself pretty hardened to this type of reading but I felt so sorry for the children in this family having such an evil, nutcase of a mother. It's little wonder that children growing up in the violent and sick environment that these poor kids had turn out to be killers and develop severe mental problems. The thing that gets me,and you hear this all the time,is that although friends and neigbours and even family members knew that this mother was a sandwich short of a picnic - nobody tries to help these poor kids! This woman was a manipulative sadistic woman so consumed with jealousy that her daughters were prettier than her that she tortured them killing two out of three in the end.The worst thing is,is that she enlisted the help of her own sons to get rid of the bodies! These children endured severe beatings, starvation followed by mountains of food fed forcefully until they were sick and made to eat the vomit, they were drugged, made to drink enough alcohol until they passed out and eventually one of the daughters was shot by her own mother while being held in place by her two brothers because her mother was a lousy shot an didn't want to miss. Not only was she shot but as she didn't die,her mother nursed her back to health.I won't tell you how the bullet was removed as I don't want to ruin the next set of unimaginable events for you. This book is not one of the most well written that I have read but the story makes up for that.Very sad,Your worst nightmare come true,I only hope that someone does to the mother what she did to her kids.Makes you gasp. Will stay in your mind.A must for all true crime readers but not for the faint hearted.

WHATEVER MOTHER SAYS
By A Customer
This book is EXCELLENTLY well written. No dry parts at all. I couldn't put it down. All about the WORST mother ever! It gives you a look at each of her children, and each of her husbands (she was actually acquitted of murdering her first one!), as well as telling the story of her, from childhood.
I thought it was wonderful the way, he wrote about her children, especially the daughters. It made me feel as though I knew them, and it made me feel great empathy for them. They had their own hopes and dreams, and it's incredibly sad they couldn't live to have freedom.
I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYONE WOULD GIVE THIS BOOK LESS THAN 5 STARS, JUST BECAUSE WENSLEY CLARKSON DIDN'T WAIT UNTIL AFTER HER TRIAL, OR THAT IT WAS "YUCKY" Really! What do you expect from a true crime book? If you have delicate sensitivities you shouldn't read this genre.
Well researched. Excellent book. One of the most gripping I've read in a while.

Family cruelty in its' most shocking form!

My name is Detective David Lundberg. I am in the book. The author claimed that I acted as an agent when the media came calling on Teri. I was only trying to protect her. I did not go after a movie deal as alledged in the book. I was only trying to help the victim of one of the worst crimes in America, from being victimized again in the crazed world of Hollywood and mass media. I just want the truth to be known. My e-mail address is Dave_Lundberg@MSN.COM Thank You
