A Dense, Academic Work that is not Easily Accessible

I read this book for a church history class in seminary. The six students all had negative reactions to reading it not because of the subject or thesis but due to the writing style of Chadwick. We all found it to be written in an inaccessible style that proved difficult to read and follow. Despite that shared sentiment, the book offers some valuable insights that reward readers who trudge through it.

Chadwick is undoubtedly a master of the data touched on in this book. He assumes a sophisticated knowledge of the subject among his readers. He makes many unexplained references to people, places and events. He meanders through history, culture, politics and trends. At first glance, the writing seems unorganized and off-track; however, he seems to approach a subject from all angles as he makes his points.

Each chapter seems to stand alone. Some are more direct than others. Chadwick paints liberalism as an ideal presented by rational thinkers hoping to initiate a society of responsible social living in which all individuals shared the opportunity for liberty within a moral and just system. Society should be programmed to promote and foster individuality in behavior and expression. He asserts that Christian conscience was the initial force that began to make Europe "secular" by invoking the liberty and tolerance in society that would allow people to worship according to their consciences without fear of impeachment. Liberal thinkers believed people needed "far more room to act and think than they were allowed by established laws and conventions in European society." (22)

Liberal theology was emboldened by the emphasis on the mind which among liberals led to an equation of religion with philosophy rather than something unique and supernatural. Chadwick suggests that once religion was considered as an intellectual field rather than otherworldly, it became subject to skeptics. As science gained the spotlight through scientists like Darwin, religion was then subjected to the methods of the scientists who based truth on evidence and on what could be proven.

Chadwick discusses the scientists Vogt who in the mid-nineteenth century taught that science had disproved religion. Others like Buchner taught that since science and Darwin had disproved God they have also proven that the universe has no purpose and religious people were deceived and deceivers.

Chadwick devotes a chapter to Marx that is probably the most comprehensible chapter and offers a somewhat sympathetic perspective of Marx. The discussion of Marx' thoughts on religion and human needs is interesting and enlightening.

Chadwick shows that the problem with the liberal-rationalist-Marx view is that religion did not go away. The people did not reject God or faith. As Chadwick asserts, Christianity contains a gospel of hope for humans that is built not upon reason or experience but upon teaching received as revelation. He writes that on justification by faith "was founded the redemption of man, an optimism that, despite chains which bound him to hell, God could raise him up, to mount towards heaven as the eagles fly, to run and not be weary." (36) Liberalism which was based on principles of toleration and liberty was faced with the challenge to tolerate the church or turn against itself.

Chadwick shows how liberalism is constantly challenged by reality itself. Liberalism, by its nature, must allow men the liberty to determine the truths behind the universe and humanity. I think it was this conflict between sentimentalism and reality, provable or unprovable, natural or supernatural, that characterizes the theology of this period as theologians, philosophers, and scientists all tried to define what constituted truth.

Chadwick points out that during this period it was in vogue among secularists not to discover the truth but to criticize what was commonly held to be true. This included the criticism of the historicity of the Biblical narrative, including the life of Jesus portrayed in the gospels. Renan characterizes the age with his writing of the non-supernatural life of Jesus. Jesus becomes the ideal man, someone any person could admire and seek to imitate. Jesus is humanity, and so rather than a God being worshipped, humanity itself is worshipped and glorified. Human progress through science and thought will take responsibility for progress and advancement.

A dense but fascinating book

Owen Chadwick's work examines the meaning and processes of secularization in European society. Chadwick makes some illuminating insights into the various dimensions of secularization. His style, however, is somewhat convoluted and confusing. It requires close reading to extract the important theses in this book.

Chadwick divides his work into two sections corresponding to the two dimensions of secularization--the social and the intellectual. In each section Chadwick makes important contributions to understanding various figures and movements--Marx, Voltaire, August Comte, anticlericalism and critical historiography, to name just a few. Among his most important theses, he postulates that nationalism was a far greater force for secularization than, for example, science. This was certainly true in Italy, where the papacy was a great obstacle to unification of that country.

Chadwick summarizes that the most palpable effect of secularization is not necessarily a shift in intellectual thinking, or even in social action, but in a loss of "providence." After the various advances in natural science, critical historiography, and moral philosophy, the average person no longer felt the strong presence of God in the world. There was no longer the sense that God "counted the hairs on every person's head." This effect was the most important of the secularization of Europe in the nineteenth century, more so than any overt changes in the intellectual or political life of Europe.

This book is dense, as Chadwick intertwines his various theses and examinations of figures in a complex narrative. His prose is poetic and flowing, but he is not interested in merely in laying out facts. He often presumes knowledge of persons and events without any exposition, and dives straight into his penetrating analysis. It takes patience and some background knowledge to fully understand this book, but it is well worth the effort.

Chadwick's study on the Secularization of the European mind in the 19th century is an exceptionally well-written and intensely studied analysis of a vast topic. He does an excellent job of disproving many erred historical theories. The alternative theories he offers are typically well supported; however, some are based on unsound assumption and unfounded generalizations. Perhaps the most noted is his downplaying of the influence of Darwinism. Overall this book is very good and is recommended for anyone interested in the subject. It is not bathroom reading.

Learning Spanish basics

I began learning Spanish 16 months ago on a very informal basis, largely due to my changing work environment. I have purchased some instrtuctional CD's and Spanish for Dummies and Spanish Verbs for Dummies. The 'dummies' series does offer information about culture and provides an excellent phonetic reference for correct pronunciation of words. Both were interesting and pragmatic.

This book, [Spanish Verb Tenses] was recommended by Amazon. I read the reviews and found the price to be reasonable enough to try the book. I have found the book to be very user friendly. The concepts and gramatical basics are covered, but the exercises are enjoyable. I have since purchased Ms. Richmond's other two books: one for vocabulary and the other for pronouns. Each have delivered the exceptional discussion of language. They highlight both the similarities between english and spanish as well as the decisive differences. I feel that these books will provide me with skills to be more confident to speak spanish to native speakers in a gramatically correct manner. Thank you--

This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.

This book is so great!

This book and the other Practice-Makes-Perfect workbook by Dorothy Richmond ("Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions") are the best Spanish books I've ever used. I just got back from 2 years in the Peace Corps in Honduras and I studied these books every day. They REALLY helped me learn more Spanish! In addition to the concise, easy-to-understand instruction sections, there's tons of exercises to do (with the correct answers in the back of the book) and as I did the exercises, I picked up all kinds of things that I'd been wondering how to say. I also liked the verb workbook a lot because it went way beyond the present tense, all the way to the subjunctive uses of "haber" and other more advanced things I really wanted to know. (This book is especially great if you already know some Spanish because you need some vocabulary to do the exercises, unless you don't mind looking up lots of words in the dictionary.) I highly recommend this book!

Great help!

My husband and I love dogs. We have actually have three – A Pomeranian, a Pit bull, and a Pug. When you’re a pet owner, you would always want the best for your pets and treat them as a family. I’ve heard about the benefits of essential oil for dogs so, I brought this book and it was definitely worth it. It was so amazing because I’ve learned how to make a homemade essential oil for my dogs. I really recommend this to dog owners. I’ve learned so much from this book. And all of them are definitely working for our dogs. My favorite is the essential oils to eliminate bad odor, since we’re taking care of 3 different breeds. And we are just so happy with the result!

Very Helpful Guide

I'm new to essential oils, but after mixing a couple of drops of copaiba in a carrier oil and applying it to the pads of my dog's foot and massaging it on her tummy, she soon began walking without a limp after being in pain for several weeks! This amazing experience so intrigued me, I had to learn more about how to use EO's on my pet. This book contains some very useful information, including how and why EO's work, EO recipes for specific health conditions and shampoos, plus directions for application. I especially found useful the list of what oils NOT to use on dogs! It is a great resource that I'm sure I will turn to again and again.

Handy Starting Place for Learning

I am an avid dog lover and have two large dogs. In addition, I am extremely reluctant to use synthetic products. So, I was happy to find this little gem entitled, “Essential Oils for Dogs Quickstart Guide” The guide provides some good basic information – describing the myriad of benefits to using natural essential oils for dogs and providing a list of commonly used oils.

But I was especially surprised by the quality and quantity of practical recipes provided for different ailments. I felt they were well worth the price of the book. I especially like the Peppermint Pain Relief Blend as I have an eleven-year-old dog experiencing some arthritis symptoms. And, I would recommend trying one of the anxiety relief blends for dogs with anxiety before going to the vet for valium. I have a three-year-old lab that has separation anxiety. After trying one of the anxiety blends, I witnessed some immediate relief – as he was more relaxed than usual.

“Essential Oils for Dogs Quickstart Guide” is also full of recipes for fleas. With summer quickly approaching, I can’t wait to give some of these a try as alternatives to chemical products. My only caution with this guide would be to read the safety guidelines toward the back of the book before starting and be sure to follow the quantities and instructions of each recipe precisely.

Of the many good books on the subject of intercultural communication and psychology, this hits a good balance of readability and academic soundness. Lots of good illustrations. Great text for college intercultural communication courses.

Brislin makes it easy

Understanding Culture's Influence (2nd edition) has been my "foundation" book for a college course entitled Diversity In the Workplace.
Dr. Brislin uses an easy to follow format which is loaded with excellent analogies, making complex topics understandable.

My only negative comment would be for the publisher. As this book is used as a text, the selection of print paper was poor. Highlighters bleed through from one page to the next which makes spotting important information difficult on review.

About the Author
Chris Wraight is the author of the Horus Heresy novel Scars, the novella Brotherhood of the Storm and the audio drama The Sigillite. For Warhammer 40,000 he has written the Space Wolves novels Blood of Asaheim and Stormcaller, and the short story collection Wolves of Fenris, as well as the Space Marine Battles novels Wrath of Iron and Battle of the Fang. A solid Black Library novel.

This is probably one of the better books in the End Times series that culminated the saga of the Old World in preparation for the Age of Sigmar Warhammer revamp. In it the forces of Chaos are encroaching upon the Empire's capital of Altdorf and for most of the book following a surprising prologue we follow the Reiksmarshal,Kurt Helborg,as he attempts to muster a defense of the capital. The pace is quite good and the perspective changes around quite a lot from new characters to certain prolific names in the Warhammer world (Which I won't spoil,but provide a great moral conundrum within the story).

As it is a Warhammer novel the action is as visceral as ever. The Prologue is particularly enrapturing before things go south because like the 5th book gave Valten a little time to shine in the prologue this one gave Karl Franz some time in the limelight and Chris Wraight handles his character exceptionally well; You can very much see why he is a man that entire legions would follow into glorious battle to protect the Empire. From there things happen and the book does a solid job never letting up and the climax is bittersweet for any fan of the Empire and it's panoply of heroes. It should be noted that while I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it and the vocabulary is excellent like many of these Black Library novels there are a few blatant typos that do seem a little silly,but they weren't enough to dampen my enjoyment of this book.

All in all it was an excellent read!

Pretty well written and developed story

Pretty well written and developed story. It is pretty depressing story - end of the world type stuff. U will find out what happens to a major character - FRANZ. The ending is intriguing - but little confusing as to what actually happened - when the emperors fate is revealed. Nice to see the bad guys dont have it all their own way. Sort of a no-one wins scenario.

Psychological insight into evil

Steve Becker's "The Inner World of the Psychopath" offers great psychological insight into the minds of a small proportion of the population who are irremediably evil: psychopaths and narcissists. Looking at evil in moral terms--in terms of sin, repentance and redemption--usually cannot help us grasp the psyche of psychopaths: human beings who are constitutionally incapable of empathy and remorse. Whether born with an emotional deficiency or becoming that way because of their dysfunctional upbringing, the bottom line remains the same: psychopaths cannot change and will never turn into loving and other-regarding human beings. While it is difficult for "normal" human beings to wrap their minds around the phenomenon of psychopathy, this book explains with great clarity and depth how and why these pathologically selfish and cruel individuals lure, use and torment their victims. Very useful to specialists but written for a general audience, "The Inner World of the Psychopath" is an indispensable book for understanding the mentality of dangerous social predators suffering from incurable personality disorders. excellent analysis of the Psychopathic Personality

It took me just part of an afternoon to read Steve Becker's important, informative, lucid book about the Psychopathic Personality. I've always admired Isaac Asimov who wrote about complex science in simple English words enabling the lay person to understand without using the symbols and formulas for example of "Carbon Chemistry". Dr. Becker accomplishes this here, enabling the victim or some one who cares about a victim to recognize the condition and realize that there is only one solution for someone in this destructive relationship and that is to get out of the relationship with the psychopath because the Psychopath is NOT TREATABLE AND HE(usually but not always a he) WON'T CHANGE.
Often the victim needs help to leave.

Steve Becker has written a clear, informative and highly readable book on a topic that should be of importance to everyone, since we will all deal with this type of personality at some point in our lives. The structure of the book - short chapters on discrete topics such as "Psychopaths as 'Emotion Simulators' ", "Can Psychopaths Love?", "Will the Psychopath Inevitably Exploit His Family?", and so on - highlights the book's main points and makes it easy to read and to use as a reference. Each chapter builds on and reinforces those that precede it, leaving the reader with a clear picture of the basic traits of a psychopathic personality.
