Great Characters

Received an ARC for an honest review.

I love this storyline and these characters. I like how the characters are being developed. I love the sexual tension, chemistry and working relationship between Axel and Holly.

The only negative for me is that I wish it were one, long book instead of many small ones. I want to sit and read the whole story at one time.

The scene in axel's office after his meeting was absolute perfection lol it made me laugh so hard I dropped my kindle!!

Holly and axel are changing each other without even realizing it and it's amazing to watch. Without even trying they become the person they were always meant to be. Cant wait to follow the rest of their journy

Eve Titus (1905–2002) wrote many books for children during her long career, including the Basil of Baker Street books and the Anatole series.

Paul Galdone (1907–1986) illustrated hundreds of children’s books, including the Basil of Baker Street series and the Anatole books, which received Caldecott Honors. He was posthumously awarded the 1996 Kerlan Award for his contribution to children’s literature.

Fun introduction to the mystery genre.

As a big fan of Sherlock Holmes, I'm always intrigued when I hear about a new take on the most famous fictional detective of all time. And having seen the Disney animated version of The Great Mouse Detective, I was curious to see what this series was like. And I quite enjoyed this first book in the series where the reader is first introduced to Basil, the mouse who lives in the cellar of Sherlock Holmes house on Baker Street, number 221B. In this story, Basil and his associate Dr. Dawson set off to find a pair of mouse twins who have been kidnapped. The story is simple enough to be easy to follow for those just being introduced to mysteries with enough details to demonstrate some of the skills for which Sherlock Holmes and by extension the deductive skills he is so famous for. The story is short enough to be a quick read. Dawson is a fun narrator whose own abilities help highlight his famous companion. Basil of Baker Street makes for a enjoyable introduction to the mystery genre and a prelude to the more famous mysteries of Sherlock Holmes.

About the Author
Yohan Ariffin is senior lecturer at the Institut d'etudes politiques, historiques et internationales of the University of Lausanne. His work addresses the role of normative and affective ideas in international relations. He has held research fellowships at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Institut d'études politiques, Paris.

Jean-Marc Coicaud is Professor of Law and Global Affairs and Director of the Division of Global Affairs at Rutgers University, New Jersey. In addition to serving as a Global Ethics Fellow with the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, he has published widely in the fields of political theory, comparative politics, international relations, and international law.

Vesselin Popovski is Vice Dean of the Law School and Executive Director of the Centre for UN Studies at Jindal Global University, India. He is the author of numerous books and articles on human rights and public international law and has participated in major international initiatives including the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty and the Princeton Project on Universal Jurisdiction.

Stello (1832) is the story of the artist’s ongoing struggle against society under a variety of political systems. In this classic French novel, the despairing poet Stello consults the mysterious Doctor Noir in the hopes of being cured of the “blue devils” which torment him. Stello fears he has no choice but to devote his artistic talents to some utopian political ideal; in the hopes of dispelling his delusions, the Doctor recounts the story of three historical poets: Nicholas Gilbert, Thomas Chatterton and André Chénier, each of whom similarly came to grief in the different societies in which they found themselves. The Doctor’s final sobering prescription for Stello’s woes can be seen not only as a way forward for the novel’s protagonist, but also as surprisingly relevant words of caution for the artist of today.

Alfred de Vigny (1797-1863), poet, playwright, and novelist, was one of the strangest and most contradictory figures of the French Romantic movement: a complaining stoic, an apostle of honour who served as a police spy, a sensual misogynist. These ambiguities are found also in his intellectual life―he was the rational Romantic, the prosaic poet, the atheist believer. Vigny is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for Servitude et grandeur militaires (1845), a collection of meditations on his time spent in the French army.

Irving Massey’s translation introduces an important French text to those who are unable to read the original version and are nevertheless interested in French literature, in Romanticism, or in the history of prose fiction. The translation is remarkably faithful to the French text; the subtleties of Vigny’s irony are preserved, and the various narrative dictions―which range from dispassionate commentary to impassioned outbursts―are reproduced with accuracy and sensitivity.

For this new edition, Dr. Massey has added an addendum to his original introduction and expanded the notes; also included is a short bibliography of Vigny studies undertaken since this translation was first published in 1963.
