Flawed survey

This book is somewhat frustrating. As a history, it is weakened significantly because it is simply rife with factual errors and could have used a good editor. As a survey it is constrained because it is heavily weighted toward British architecture. That having been said, the author offers a few valid critical insights and many of the photos that were used capture the flavor of the buildings chosen. However, there are many finer architectural surveys available than this tome.

Wow, what a waste of time this was. This tale is nothing more than a rambling adolescent fantasy story. Think of "animal House" on wheels. Seriously, if people actually acted and behaved this way while traveling the Overland routes, then it is easy to understand why most of the third world looks down on westerners. The trips and descriptions of the routes and sites feel like they were lifted from someone's online travel blog and then covered in cheap, dime store romance fiction.
