I would like to personally write a letter or send an email to Fred Pyrczak because he made learning statistics SUPER easy. I'm in a Master's degree program and I had to take a statistics exam to "test out" of taking the course since it had been three years since I took it in my undergrad. I was so nervous I wouldn't pass the exam and that I would have to push back my entire program just to fit in the stats course but I didn't thanks to this author!!! I tested out on my exam on my first try! He is so amazing. I mean, he gives you TONS of real life examples. There's no way you can not apply this to things going on in the world around you. TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLLY GET THIS BOOK IF YOU NEED TO LEARN STATS!

Over The Top

Mysteries are my favorite genre so I have read hundreds of them. I do enjoy some humor in them, preferably in the form of witty dialogue - think Agatha Christie. Having said that, I laughed out loud several times in this book. The humorous situations are way over the top and not the least subtle. I think, as a matter of fact, this might make a good TV series because of the sight gags. So, despite being a fan of more subtle humor, I enjoyed this book once I suspended disbelief. The interesting thing is, despite the comedy/mystery in this book, the author manages to sort out some of the devastating problems that sometimes hit people out of the blue. Kudos.

The protagonist works for a licensed private detective. (One of the suspensions of disbelief is in how she keeps her license.) Called to help her boss, our protagonist, Margie, is plunged into one of the over the top situations I previously mentioned, and things go downhill from there.Plus, she has serious problems at home, including a 6 year old who fantasizes she is a dog and refuses to eat anything that isn't white. And, actually, that is the least of her problems.

I did not read the first book, but I probably will. It is called "Mother's Day Out." I did not need to have read the first to enjoy the second.

Undoubtedly the most delightful and comical cozy mystery I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Karen MacInerney has managed to create a bevy of quirky and intriguing characters that will captivate you throughout their journey. I absolutely love the way the author has made caricatures out of individuals we may encounter in daily life. Yes, the escapades were at times outlandish, but that's what made the story so enjoyable. Look out Lucy and Ethel, here comes Margie and Peaches. Simply a MUST read!!!

I am so happy that I was given the opportunity to read this book.
What a quirky story filled with outlandish characters. This is definitely not your typical cozy mystery.
Private Investigator Margie is dealing with a lot in her life. Her husband is having an identity crisis, her daughter is acting like a dog and her free spirit of a mother is visiting and throwing out all of her not so nutritious food.
If this isn't enough, Margie receives a 3 a.m. phone call from her boss, Peaches.
Answering that call leads Margie knee deep in strip clubs, illegal drugs and of course, wrangling a very pregnant Bubba Sue, who is not a typical tea cup pig.
Believe me, this book is one of THE BEST cozy mysteries I've read. This is a ten star story for sure.

Throughout this story the author had me laughing and crying while keeping me guessing until the very end.

I highly recommend this story and can't wait to share this review with my book group.

Who let this book go out of print?!!

Who understands publishers? Just because a guy is no longer alive doesn't mean his words were worthless. With so many badly designed products on the market today, you would think a book like this one, which gives the designer a fighting chance of realising an excellent product, would be in multiple reprints. If you can find a copy of this book, make it your own. This book tells you how products SHOULD be designed. Better still, badger Amazon and the publishers (Addison Wesley - who should know better!) until they reprint it. Pugh's memory deserves the credit, even if the great man is no longer with us.

Make no mistake here. Total Design is certaingly one of the best books EVER on the subject of product development and engineering design. Great book for public health and health commnunication

I bough this textbook for my health communication course. I found it so helpful I didn't sell it after the semester was over. It's a great book that teaches you how to be culture-sensitive, how to relate to patients, and how to meet the needs of patients when there are communication barriers. I totally recommend this book if you are working or planning to pursue a career in health communication, public health, or even medicine!

Wonderful book

I used this book for a health communication class, it is SUCH a great book! The author presents a lot of interesting stories and personal experiences. The language is very simple yet it uses language that is relative to public and community health. Some of my favorite stories in the book include the stories about Christopher Reeves experience with disability and a story of a family that had to accommodate a young child's disability. All in all, this is one of the most fun to read textbooks that I have ever read.

Alan Loy McGinnis (19332005) was a best-selling author, family therapist, business consultant, and popular speaker. After a twenty year career as a minister, he became a counselor and co-founded the Valley Counseling Center in Glendale, CA. In the 1970s, he began researching friendship and authored The Friendship Factor, published by Augsburg Fortress in 1979 and revised in 2004. A popular speaker, he also authored more than fifty articles and several more books, including Bringing Out the Best in People, Confidence, and The Balanced Life, all published by Augsburg Fortress

This book helped change my life...

I know you've heard that phrase before, I know I have. And yet, I did not experience this until after having read this book. I didn't even think I had a problem with confidence, any more than the next person, that is, until I started reading it. McGinnis touches on so many points and issues that many of us have, but do not realize are related to how we view ourselves. He also points out where a lot of our "flaws" are connected to our past AND how we can help change that. "Confidence" teaches you to accept yourself and love yourself. It is a book that approaches this topic from a spiritual and religious perspective (but this not overdone). Reading this book helped me to change my view of myself as well as to move forward from the past and address the emotional issues that were hindering me. I give it 5 stars and I think everyone should read it...I know that I am glad that I did.

Learn to understand your self will take you futher in life

This book is quite challenging for the everyday person. You will learn your weaknesses that are probably really destroying your life. As you begin to read you start to understand what is really happening. This book gets you to understand that self-confidence is the building block of your life and it starts early in life as a newborn. You will learn to focus on your strong points and not your weaknesses. How you view your self as a person and that god creates us all. We all endowed in us remarkable capacities to reach for the maximum. You will learn that comparison causes us to be obsessed with our limitations. So reading this book would change anybody's thought and beliefs of themselves and to be your self.

Advocates Healthy Self-Esteem

Dr. McGinnis writes, "One of the strangest things we observe in therapy is that people who doubt themselves often cannot accept compliments." He prefaces this observation with a call for balance, saying this book is not designed to present an exaggerated look at self-esteem. The other extreme to be avoided is low self-esteem and false modesty. The approach taught in the Bible is to "love your neighbor as you love yourself." That is the balance he advocates.
I love writers who reinforce something I'm already doing. Such is the case with this author who tells his readers to keep a journal. There's other solid advice given such as spend time in solitude, praying and seeking God's Wisdom. We're reminded that we are always in a state of flux and will be as long as we live.
In developing this balanced approach to life even further, he quotes Karl Menninger in saying that to be well-adjusted a healthy person needs a combination of play, love, and work. Yes, work is part of the mix. Self-esteem comes from a sense of purpose. Discovering who God designed you to be is part of life's joyous adventure. He notes, "God's blueprint for us is often written in our natures."
The power of imaging is explained in this book. Like me, he visualized himself becoming a doctor before he finished earning the degree. He describes how faith is an integral part of this imagination process.
Dr. McGinnis successfully brings his discussion to a logical conclusion by talking about the connection between love of self, love of others and love of God. Those, of course, are what sum up the commandments. Jesus told us that. This book adds some substance to that ongoing exploration. Reading it and applying its teachings will enhance your life's quality.
