Govan is the man (HEY that rhymed!)

Seriously, this guy can do anything with a guitar. Not only one of the best players out today, but one of the best teachers. Guthrie Govan really gives you insight on some of his techniques, and it's up to you how/where to use them in your playing. Yet, I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner or even the early-stage intermediate player. Some of the topics and techniques can get really gnarly, but there very effective for the guitarist who plays 3 hours a day everyday. This book is pointless if you can't play the exercises and most of these exercises will take a while to conceptualize even for the seasoned player. That being said, I love this book and I love his playing. The CD that comes with the book is pretty much Guthrie Govan showing off for a few hours, but was needed to hear reference to what you are reading about. Govan is the man and his musical prowess will grow further as time goes on, I expect awesome things from him on both the playing, as well as the teaching side.

Guthrie Govan is not only an amazing guitarist, he's also a fantastic teacher

Received it with bent pages so I had to keep it under some heavy books for a while. But it's the content that is important and this book kicks ass. Guthrie Govan is not only an amazing guitarist, he's also a fantastic teacher. I would definitely buy this book again. But be sure to get the first book in the series too.

A great creative spur

I have been a great fan of Guthrie Govan (the author of this book) since I read his articles in the pages of Guitar Techniques magazine (also a great resource):)
I really liked the way the author summarized and verbalized the techniques that are involved in playing. For me, it was a great way to explain how each technique should look like and feel like which for this part, I believe is the sign of a good teaching technique.
This book is great for people who have played for a while and think are pretty familiar with the majority of concepts the instrument has to offer and Guthrie here throws a monkey wrench into the system. As guitarists we realize that the comibations and scale patterns are virtually endless but he offers combinations and ideas that sound melodious and musical.
I particularly liked the sections on picking (a great simple explanation of a big topic), the immitation of other instruments on the guitar (now I don't need that mandolin) and the two handed techniques deserve hours and hours of expirementation.
If you have been playing for several years and if you feel like you in a bit of a rut this one is for you.

About the Author

Turan Gönen is Professor of Electrical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento. He holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical College (1964 and 1966, respectively), and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University (1975). Dr. Gönen also received an MS in Industrial Engineering (1973) and a Ph.D. co-major in Industrial Engineering (1978) from Iowa State University, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Oklahoma (1980).

Professor Gönen is the Director of the Electrical Power Educational Institute at California State University, Sacramento. Previously, Dr. Gönen was Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Energy Systems and Resources Program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Professor Gönen also held teaching positions at the University of Missouri-Rolla, the University of Oklahoma, Iowa State University, Florida International University and Ankara Technical College. He has taught electrical electric power engineering for over thirty one years.

Dr. Gönen also has a strong background in power industry; for eight years he worked as a design engineer in numerous companies both in the United States and abroad. He has served as a consultant for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Aramco, Black & Veatch Consultant Engineers, and the public utility industry. Professor Gönen has written over 100 technical papers as well as four other books: Modern Power System Analysis, Electric Power Distribution System Engineering, Electrical Machines, and Engineering Economy for Engineering Managers.

Turan Gönen is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He served on several Committees and Working Groups of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, and he is a member of numerous honor societies including Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Alpha Pi. Professor Gönen received the Outstanding Teacher Award at CSUS in 1997.

Joseph H. Carens, Ph.D., is Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. He is the author of Culture, Citizenship, and Community, which won the 2002 C. B. Excruciatingly boring, long-winded and repetitive. Also smug and self-satisfied. The problem for me is that despite this, he is right. But such writing does its cause - in this case a humane irrigation policy - no good.

This book works!

I read "First Things Fast, 2nd edition" on the plane, while traveling to see a new client for a week of analysis for a large e-learning initative. The client asked me to spend my time before the meeting going through mountains of content, and I did a lot of that... But the most important preparation I did was reread this book. "First Things Fast" provides sample questions and checklists for tackling performance analysis quickly. It organizes these tools into specific types of projects, such as a new system rollout, a performance problem, people development and more. Reading this book kept me focused on the goal of our analysis, which was to identify needs and solutions that would fill the gap. This book promotes using data to help make decisions and set priorities. On this recent project, the data helped paint a clear picture on where to put our energy. The book works. I suggest you reread it at the time of need. It definitely helps make analysis efforts more productive.

`When you read the words on the page you give it life - yours...'

Gary Rimmer is a discovery for this reader. Finding no biographical information - other than the fact that he has written several fascinating sounding books such as `Number Freaking', `Football Freaking', `My Magic Diet' (in which his title page quotes his weight loss in kilograms and stones suggesting he is from the UK), `How to Make a Camel Smoothie and other surreal sums' - we are left to rely on evaluating him on the basis of his work alone. And what a masterful poet he reveals in LOVELAND: THE OCTETS.

A bit of background information about poetic matters: `An octet is a stanza of poetry that has eight lines. Apparently the Octet is an invented form introduced by Dr. Laura Andersson. It is simply a diminishing octave. The Octet is an octastich, a poem in 8 lines, syllabic, 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 syllables per line, unrhymed,'variable and can be written as a mirror or can be reversed.' But other than the fact that Gary's poems are indeed eight lines in length, that is all that really matters. It is what he does with those eight lines that condenses an idea, allows it to bloom, and offers it as little word pictures addressing the human condition and our world and especially love, as suggested by the title `Loveland'. But descriptive words fail and it is better to share some of his octets:

Dove Returns

There is no greater joy
Than a loved one
Returning home unexpectedly.
It is like the returning spring
After a winter of discontent.
The earth is covered
With a new complexion -
And the air is filled with scent.

Dissonance
When list'ning to Mozart,
It stimulates the heart,
The dissonance quartet,
Plays for a sweet regret:
Within the first movement,
Chords in disagreement,
A heart felt turbulence,

Of love, and condolence.

If

If I could only as Freud once said
Forget, and in doing so,
All my pains and griefs are shed,
Without a single sorrow;
And so arising from my bed,
Not unlike the sun tomorrow,
To walk a different path instead,

With my yonder dreams, - to follow.

This gentle volume offers fifty five new poems by Gary, obviously constructed with great care into the octet form, but even more important they touch us on many levels, asking to be read aloud and memorized for those solitary moments when we need such beauty. Masterful! Grady Harp, June 15

Brief...but Beautiful

Powerful poetry seems to be a dying art, which I consider a true tragedy, as I have been a lover of poetry for many years, and have noticed a stark drop-off in the amount of modern poetry that is coming out. I feel like our fast-paced world doesn't have time or space for well-planned verses any longer, but Rimmer fortunately disagrees. In these simple, powerful, and meticulously crafted poems, we see a life exposed, and a philosophy revealed. These are emotional poems, digging deep into the mindset of the poet, but I wish we had been allowed to see a bit more. This was regrettably brief, and I came to the end almost as quickly as I had begun. Granted, I did go back and re-read a number of the poems, as they were striking, and beautifully done, but I wish this book had been twice as long. If Rimmer has this much insight bottled up inside, then I would love to see more of his work in the future. It can be difficult writing within a strict form like an octet, but for a talented poet, verses and ideas can be liberated, and I felt like this particular poet has that talent...I just wish he had given us a bit more.

A Lot Can Be Said in 8 Lines....

I enjoy poetry in many forms, and while I am not a huge fan of classic forms, and prefer a more modern approach to verse, Rimmer has delivered a memorable collection in an older octet form, but he danced between different octet styles and slapped a modern swing on some of them that read more like free verse than a rigid form. Not only that, but the subject matter that Rimmer tackled was universal and classic, existential in a sense, but wasn't inaccessible. These poems were intelligent and accessible, a rare combination in poetry. In these short poems, he uses words as tools, individual phrases as themes, and must capture so much in so little time. There is dissonance here, as well as unity and hope, but the tension is undeniable. I think Rimmer writes to answer his own questions, but only some of these poems seem to find an answer. They pose far more head-scratching moments of contemplation for readers, so in that respect, Rimmer has succeeded. Thanks for the surprising, albeit brief, treat.
