About the Author
James Stephens, (born Feb. 9, 1880, Dublin—died Dec. 26, 1950, London), Irish poet and storyteller whose pantheistic philosophy is revealed in his fairy tales set in the Dublin slums of his childhood and in his compassionate poems about animals. Stephens was working as a solicitor’s clerk and educating himself when he met the Irish poet AE (George William Russell), who encouraged him and helped him publish Insurrections, his first book of poetry, in 1909. His first novel, The Charwoman’s Daughter, appeared in 1911 in The Irish Review, which he had helped found that year. It was his next book, The Crock.

A fascinating look at the tradition of folklore in Ireland.

In this delightful volume, first published in 1892, William Butler Yeats has collected all manner of Irish folklore (mostly short stories, with a few poems) from a wide variety sources. He has divided the works into categories as follows: the "Trooping Fairies" (fairies, changelings, and the "merrow" or mermaids); the "Solitary Fairies" (the lepracaun, the pooka - an animal spirit, and the banshee); "Ghosts"; "Witches & Fairy Doctors"; "T'yeer-na-n-Oge" or "Tir-na-n-Og" (a legendary island said to appear and disappear); "Saints & Priests"; "The Devil"; "Giants"; and "Kings / Queens / Princesses / Earls / Robbers." Yeats introduces each section with background information on the creature the stories in that category will concern. He also includes numerous footnotes of interest, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn about the tradition of Irish folklore.
While I have given this anthology a five-star rating based on it's value as a source of information on Irish mythology, it would probably be worth only four stars for entertainment value alone. Some of the stories are very short and/or don't have much of a point, and are less interesting. These tend to serve more as testimony to the nature of a particular mythical being rather than being an actual story with a plot and message for the reader. Nevertheless, the book as a whole offers a very comprehensive look at just what defines Irish folk culture. The stories that do have a point sometimes take the form of "how things came to be this way" tales, or provide a moral lesson, etc. Many of the stories are rather dark, as that tends to be the nature of lore from this region, but there are also some lighthearted and cheerful pieces.
Despite the book having been compiled more than one hundred years ago, most of the stories are quite easy to read. Yeats makes things even more simple for the reader by making footnotes where old Irish words or phrases are used, giving us their meaning. However, there are a few stories that have been left in a more archaic form, which is distracting and a bit harder to decipher. Take, for example, the following excerpt:
". . . the minit he puts his knife into the fish, there was a murtherin' screech, that you'd the life id lave you if you hurd it, and away jumps the throut out av the fryin'-pan into the middle o' the flure; and an the spot where it fell, up riz a lovely lady - the beautifullest crathur that eyes ever seen, dressed in white, and a band o' goold in her hair, and a sthrame o' blood runnin' down her arm" (pg. 46).
I should probably make note of the fact, for those whom it might interest, that although the title page says the book is "profusely illustrated," there are actually only a few pictures. I believe only six of the over seventy stories are illustrated, and these with simple (but nice), old-fashioned line drawings in black and white. However this is not really a criticism as I view it, since I like the book for its literary content and wouldn't really care if it had no pictures at all.
One of the things I enjoy most about literature is finding connections with other works I've read, and "Irish Fairy & Folk Tales" does not disappoint in this regard. Many of the pieces are derivations of other, more common fairy tales. For instance, "Smallhead and the King's Sons" (Ghosts / pg. 194) incorporates some elements from both "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel," while "The Giant's Stairs" (Giants / pg. 355) has some similarities to the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk." There are more connections like this. On the whole I found this book to be very enjoyable, and also a valuable read from a literary / academic standpoint. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interesting in the history of Irish culture, the study of fairy tales and folklore, or both.

I loved this book!

Yeats has long been one of my favorite poets; however, I did not expect his re-telling of Irish Fairy and Folk Tales to be up to his poetry standard. With that said, let me say he does an excellent job re-telling these old stories and if you have any interest whatsoever in fairy tales or Irish Mythology, read this book. "The Trooping Fairies" and "Witches, Fairy Doctors" were 2 of my favorite chapters but overall the whole book is a delight to read. It's an easy read, some stories are funny, some are scary, but most are just entertaining. Also there are some poems mixed in with the stories which add to the story-telling. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This absolutely charming collection of stories truly represents the best of "fairy" tales in which the fairy folk feature prominantly as well as a number of other folk beasties. This dream interpretation book is very practical and informative. Does not try to give every symbol a definition, but helps you understand how to interpret, with guidelines from scripture. Ms. McDonald has a sweet and gentle spirit that comes through in her writing. You feel as though you can trust her guidance.

I would prefer the lessons be grouped together. The scale studies, articulation exercizes and melodic interpretation studies are in different areas so you need to jump around, but it is a minor inconvenience. Many of the excersizes have no brakes were a breath can be taken. As one instructor suggested, cheat, leave a note out and get a breath.

This is the book I learned on over 40 years ago. I recently found Vol 1 among my old sheet music, but Vol 2 was missing, so I ordered it. I start my daily practice by going through the scales and exercises in these books. These books are still valid. I have my student on the beginning book of this series.

Robert Clive (1725–1774), later 1st Baron Clive, is widely considered the founder of British India. He arrived in Madras as a clerk for the East India Company in 1744. Through timely promotion and a clear affinity for military leadership, he proceeded to consolidate the company’s commercial and territorial position in South India before doing the same in the northeast in Bengal. In 1757 company troops under his command defeated the nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey. This victory set in motion the East India Company’s ascendancy over much of India, paving the way for the 1857 creation of the British Raj, which would last for another ninety years.

Clive is a fascinating and important historical figure: a lowly company employee who rose to great heights; an informally trained military commander who led company and local Indian troops to a series of stirring victories over local rivals who were supported by the French; a grasping politician who used his great wealth to secure a prominent social position; and, finally, a hounded society notable who, plagued by illness, allegedly took his own life.

No one in the early days of the British ventures in India was as well known or as controversial as Clive became. In our own day, when empire and globalism are witnessed and talked about with ease, Clive’s position as both a servant of the East India Company—which developed into the world’s largest transnational trading company at the time—and an agent of imperialism makes him a surprisingly resonant figure.

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

I did not like it. Every other chapter was him sleeping with another girl or wanting to OR it was her apologizing. They were not a couple but were bickering children. He did not want to forgive her for her big reveal and was mad that she slept with Max but he basically hooked up with every female in town while she was gone and kept his confrontation with her father a secret. He was hypocritical and a jack butt. I did not like him one bit but I did adore Max and really wished she ended up with him. He would never have treated her the way Luke did. Luke slept with a girl because Maggie took Max's phone call in front of him. Luke then came home the next day and gloated about it to Maggie as "payback". I HATED him. He had NO redeeming qualities. The reader also had to read about that hook up and how great the sex with this girl was. Then at the end after Maggie's big reveal and after Luke gets all mad and goes off, he considers hooking up with another girl. He spent the ENTIRE book wanting her back, then he sleeps with that one girl, then he wants Maggie back, then after he has her, he goes off on a 3 week break and wants another girl. I would NEVER trust him. At least Maggie was in a relationship when she had sex with Max and had only been with him a few times at that and never thought of another guy after she got with Luke again. He was NOT worth the dirt on her shoes and if I was her brother, I would never let him be with her. How can her twin brother watch his friend sleep with random woman after random woman for 2 years and still want him for his sister??? What a bunch of stupid idiots!!!! I am so mad that I spent my last bit of my "book allowance" on this story!!!

Love the effing cover!!! Jeremy he's a good brother, "Maggie, there is no effing way you're staying here in New York, let alone working in a goddamned strip joint." Luke after years you can tell her still hardcore for his girl, "I stayed up the rest of the night planning my mode of attack to win her back, worrying she might leave, or worse, stay with Max, and I'd never get my girl again." He's real persistent as well, "go ahead, baby. Keep running, but I'll never change my mind about you. It's a waste of time to try. Cause this isn't over." I loved this book losing your first love, finding it again, going through s*** to get back to where you were it's like a fairytale!

I absolutely adored this book! Stay by Kelly Mooney was my first read by this easy to love author, because she knows how to deliver a beautiful, raw and emotional love story, one that left me lusting for more, still prying to keep the door from closing as I couldn’t leave her characters. Maggie and Luke were perfect together, being her brother’s best friend they shared an attraction and bond that made their relationship impossible to resist. Luke was so sweet, sexy, and adorable. He really made up for what Mags went through with her parents, who were forever absent from her life, favouring her twin brother Jeremy and supporting his needs, whilst Maggie’s dreams were suppressed constantly neglected, she was a strong and thoughtful girl towards other people’s needs when her own accomplishments never saw the limelight, stuck in second place, she would pick herself back up again, and look at new ways to reach her goals. Mags was definitely a girl who suffered from emotional and physical scars, the fact that she had Jeremy, Luke and Dean around to make her smile made the pain tolerable and hidden, but when her future alters and fearing the impact on her loved ones, not wanting to jeopardise their future, she decided to run leaving her dream man behind with confessions and Luke a broken man. I really felt for Mags as she tried to find peace and acceptance with her new life, and Max was the perfect guy who made her confront her demons. Now Luke, god I just loved him lol, the guy was romantic, sexy and unrelenting to get her back because she was always going to be his. Kelly Mooney really brought tears to my eyes reading his pov, my heart ached to console him as he fell deeper into a dark hole, unable to exist and relied on woman, drink and pills to numb thoughts of his loss. Now he did make my bad list when he played around and acted immature, because he couldn’t handle seeing Mags with Max, I know he was hurting and that he still struggled to overcome his pain relief to deal, but his behaviour and sexual antics kind of tainted what he shared with Mags and his appeal slightly slipped, I hated reading it because I loved his character and I wanted him to stay perfect in my eyes, good thing he did know how to redeem himself and that’s why he’s book boyfriend material for me, we all make mistakes right? This was a romantic read which I loved, drawing me into a world of heartache, loss, inner strength and second chance love as Luke Matthews fought to get his dream girl and his life back on track.

Addressing a common human malady

Bullying can take place wherever two or more persons gather. This includes not only schools, but clubs, communities, legislative bodies, highways (through the guise of road rage) and in many other venues. Further, bullying is not always obvious and easy to identify. Of course, schools are where bullying is most glaring and also where it is learned, fostered, and unfortunately mastered and attends the bully into adulthood. As a life skills trainer and family counsellor, Gail Dore's treatment of the issue is masterful and her intensive research for this book cannot be denied. In fact, one of this book's many valued features is the anecdotal documentation of bullying, giving the reader pause to consider its many forms as well as the repercussions on victims. Although written from the perspective of South African school systems, this book can be applied, I dare say, to any country and in any culture on the planet. The author's suggestions for identifying bullying and treating its symptoms, causes and impact on society are straightforward and rational.
