I've used this book as a professor for an introductory poli sci class. I wouldn't recommend it to any other instructors. It's lazily put together, so that far too many of the supposedly 'clashing views' simply talk past each other rather than against each other. In some cases the two sides are actually on the same side, which seems editorially very clumsy. Often the 'views' are dreadfully dull - consisting of government or UN reports with no discernible 'views' in them at all. A few issues are OK - especially the environmental ones (although should this book really be 'teaching the controversy' as if both sides were equally valid on global warming science?)
In addition to the problem with the choice of opinion pieces, the book is stuffed with unnecessarily repetitive introductions and postscripts, consisting of reading lists of no value to the introductory students likely to be using the text.
Other 'Taking Sides' volumes may be better than this, but this one is definitely a dud.

Decent introduction. It's mcgraw hill. The debates are not framed deeply. Some of the issues are examined in 10-15 pages, others in 3, so you don't get as deep of an understanding for all issues included. There is clearly some biases present, for example a discussion of religious extremism that focuses only on muslim issues. It's an okay place to start, but I read this my first year in college and critiqued it then.

Completely Satisfying

Based on a stage play co-written by Sayers, Busman's Holiday is Sayers last significant statement in the mystery genre--and a completely satisfying one at that. Like several other novels that involve both Sayers' sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey and mystery novelist Harriet Vane, the novel is as much a portrait of their relationship as it is a murder mystery, and while these two elements occasionally seem at odds in other works (most notably the unworthy Have His Carcass), Busman's Holiday strikes a perfect balance between the two as we follow the couple through the first few days of their honeymoon as they deal with the shock of marriage, domestic disasters, and an unexpected body in their honeymoon home's basement. As in other novels, Sayers draws a great deal from her setting--in this case rural England on the eve of World War II--and presents us with a memorable cast of supporting characters, and the result is as fine a novel as she ever produced, particularly notable for its wittiness and sly humor. A greatly satisfying finish to a highly enjoyable series.

There is, incidently, an extremely well-made 1930s film version of this particular work starring Robert Montgomery and Constance Cummings. Although Montgomery is not quite the image of Lord Peter Wimsey, he plays quite well, and Cummings is Harriet Vane brought to life on the screen. Sayers fans should enjoy the film almost as much as they enjoy the book!

Vintage Sayers.

I am glad to find so many favorable reviews of this, Dorothy L Sayers' final detective fiction novel, on the internet. It failed to find much favor with the public or the critics when it was written in the late 1930s. In actual need of the income that her earlier works in this genre had generated (she had to support not only herself but also a non-productive husband and an illegitimate son), she negotiated with her publisher to "once again try my hand at detective fiction" after he had pointed out that the market seemed to have become saturated.
Just as a busman's holiday is a vacation where the busman is likely to be as involved with driving as he is throughout the rest of the year, a busman's honeymoon (a phrase which she coined) is one where the busman (in this case Lord Peter Wimsey) is likely to spend his honeymoon checking alibis, interviewing murder suspects, observing rigor mortis, and all the other tiresome activities of an amateur detective.
Lord Peter and Harriet Vane are the honeymooners. After their wedding (reported in a series of letters that begin the novel), they travel to "Talboys", a country house chosen by Harriet. Their reception is not as predicted. Eventually Lord Peter's butler, Bunter, discovers a corpse in the cellar.
The novel began life as a play, as you may infer from the many static scenes involving a large ensemble of characters entering and exiting. The prose is as rich in wit, classical illusions and sophistication as you will ever encounter in detective fiction. Dorothy L. Sayers was an honours graduate and capable of writing as well as George Eliot.
Don't expect the kind of fast food satisfaction that Agatha Christie provided so successfully. You will find instead the full silver service dining and wining experience here.

One of the best of its genre. . .

. . .although whether the genre should properly be romance or mystery is a point up for debate. Either way, this final book in the 4-novel Harriet Vane/Peter Wimsey series is wonderful and utterly satisfying. Not only is the murder mystery extremely tight and well-done (as per normal for Sayers), but this is one of the few books of any genre I've read that really gets love right. The problems and beauties of newlywed life for two people who've been trying to come to terms with their relationship for five years are very well done, and Sayers maintains her commitment as an author to be as utterly honest and realistic about love and its complications as possible.
Oh, and the roughly 6,000 tons of unresolved romantic tension built up through the first three Wimsey/Vane books are finally resolved here, to the great relief of the reader. Just reading accounts of the wedding (which was described through a series of letters between various friends and acquaintances of the couple), I felt as if I'd finally been allowed to breathe after having my head held underwater for an interminable period of time.
I plan to keep my copy of this book for the rest of my life--if you like mysteries and enjoy a good love story, this is a safe pick.

Tom Geismar
Tom Geismar is a founding partner of Chermayeff & Geismar and widely considered a pioneer of American graphic design. During the past four decades he has designed more than a hundred corporate identity programs. His designs for Xerox, Chase Manhattan Bank, Best Products, Gemini Consulting, PBS, Univision, Rockefeller Center and, most notably, Mobil Oil have received worldwide acclaim.

Sagi Haviv
Sagi Haviv is a partner and designer at Chermayeff & Geismar. Among his numerous projects for the firm are the logo designs and identity systems for the Library of Congress, National Parks of New York Harbor, The John D. and Catherine C. MacArthur Foundation, Conservation International, and the fashion brand Armani Exchange.

Ivan Chermayeff
A prolific designer, illustrator, and artist, Ivan has created memorable, iconic images for literally hundreds of clients. As a founding partner of Chermayeff & Geismar with Tom Geismar, he has played a significant role in establishing the firm's worldwide reputation. Great reference book

This is a great book to keep as reference of corporate identity design. C&G are probably the best designers of their field, responsible for many outstanding brands. The only reason I don't rate it 5 stars is because I expected to see a little more of the construction of the most important brands, the method employed by the office to make the brand what it has become. We see just a few sketches, but not the actual work to turn it into reality.

All in all, it is a superb example of identity design, which can just make me feel jealous - or challenged, to reach at least 1/20th of what they have achieved as designers.

Wordmarks, logos and everything in between

A handsomely produced book of some distinctive brand identities created by Chermayeff & Geismar. Some of them must have entered the public consciousness by now: NBC (the peacock) PBS; Chase Manhattan; Mobil; Pan Am; Xerox (before the current one) National Geographic. Others have only been seen within certain industries or outside the US. There are several logos for the Turkish Koc Holdings.

The book, though, was rather disappointing for me because it's not much more than a portfolio of C&G work rather than a visual account of how each design was created. There is some quite detailed text on some of these marks which does in fact sum up the thinking behind the visual but I was expecting to see various roughs and scribbled ideas that created the final design. This does occur in a few but most pages show previous marks on a left-hand page with the logo centered on all the right-hand pages. Also missing is any explanation of why a particular typeface was chosen for those designs that are just typographic.

The pages really should have delivered more and I see that copies can be picked quite cheaply since publication in 2011. Worth getting maybe just to see these logos well printed and in a reasonable size.

Great album of C&G identities. Not really informative about the way of creating those brands and trademarks.
But as for album with huge illustration of their logos it is fine.

Shipping was so long, it took almost 1 month to receive a package.

Ray Gordon is my hero!

While I usually stick to the more "mainstream" erotic books I have a weakness for less subtle erotica. This has to be of his better books. While slightly contrived, it is pure escapism. TWO THUMBS UP!!

Paul Jackson has been a professional paper folder and paper artist since 1982 and is the author of more than 30 books on paper arts and crafts. He has taught the techniques of folding on more than 150 university-level design courses in the US, Germany, Belgium, the UK, Canada, and Israel. These include courses of Architecture, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Textile Design, Jewelry, Product Design, Packaging, Ceramics, Industrial Design, Fine Art, Basic Design, and Interior Design. He has also taught many workshops in museums, arts centres, and festivals and been a 'folding consultant' for companies such as Nike and Siemens.

If you work with sheet material such as paper, cloth, metal, or plastics, Paul Jackson is happy to show you what it can do. And you will be happy to learn that it can do more than you thought. "Complete Pleats" presents the possibilities in Jackson's visually clean style. He explains every step,building from the simplest fold to "accordion across knife" and "twists in combination". The diagrams give you an immediate sense of what is required, and the photos show you an excellent version of the technique. As soon as you start folding a new lesson, you will notice how the material responds, how it works, and you will think that this could lead to something really cool. You will be right.

It looks like a book, but it is really a diving board. Mr. Jackson invites you to launch yourself and your projects with fresh energy and possibilities. I have some of his previous books. I expect this one will become as traveled and worn as the others. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do.

Is exactly what it says it is

The book is designed as a study guide for the CWTS and is exactly that.
The subject is covered well with good end of chapter questions that mimic some of the prep tests I have taken.
This is a beginners guide with lots of vocabulary.

Great study guide, though becoming a tad dated

This is a fabulous study guide, one of the better in the IT world. It is straightforward and easy to understand. Using this guide alone as my only study tool, I scored 92% on the certification exam. This book made it so easy. The review questions presented in this guide are representative of those on the exam, and all test questions are covered in here. Diagrams are easy to follow and make the point effectively. I also like that the author occasionally goes into extra detail, and wants to share his knowledge, providing background relevant information and explanation, but clarifies whether such is covered on the exam. My only complaint about this guide is that it is becoming slightly dated, and does not address upcoming standards of equipment, such as 802.11ac and beyond, which are already on the market.

Good study guide for the exam

Used this book to pass the PW0-071 Certified Wireless Technology Specialist exam.

Be sure to download the practice tests as they aren't included in a CD with the book, you have to get them from www.sybex.com/go/cwts2e (it's in the product description). I skipped most of the vendor specific training segments in the book since the exam itself is vendor neutral.

Very broad overview of wireless networking. Good foundation for the more detailed and complex CWNA exam.

A Truly Magnificent Work

I have several translations of Yehudah Halevi's magnificent work, The Kuzari. This Korobkin edition is especially impressive due to incorporating a clear Hebrew translation of the original Arabic text, a new English translation, a most wonderful original introduction and extensive subject matter in the back of the quite attractive volume.
Concerning the work itself, I have previously written the following about The Kuzari: There are several good English translations of Yehudah HaLevi's classic dialogue. This translation of the original Arabic by way of the Ibn Tibbon Hebrew translation is quite accessible and well worth reading. It is clear in its presentation and vital reading for anyone wanting to understand Judaism, in contrast to Philosophy, Christianity and Islam. It emphasizes the place of God, the Jewish People and the Land of Israel. One cannot go wrong reading this hundreds of years old text that is still quite contemporary. I love this book.

A famous book with difficult to accept ideas

Halevi’s The Kuzari imagines that the king of the Kuzars decided to adopt a religion, planning to choose between Judaism, Christianity, Islam and philosophy. He invited a representative of each of the four groups and discussed their ideas with them. Needless to say, the king decided that he and the people of Kuzar would become Jews. Halevi’s anti-rational defense of Judaism focuses on two themes:
Halevi’s first contention makes a distinction between a religion whose foundation is historical, which he favors, and a religion that is based on faith or on reason. In his opinion, Jews know that Judaism is correct because it is based on facts. Jews choose to be Jewish because they are able to recall that the miracles recorded in the Bible actually occurred. He writes:
“[For a religion to be acceptable] it must also have taken place in the presence of great multitudes, who saw it distinctly, and did not learn of it from reports and traditions. In short, all that is written in the Torah and the records of the children of Israel can not be disputed because they … were revealed before a vast multitude [of witnesses]. Israel … knew these things first from personal experience, and afterwards through uninterrupted tradition [the passing on of the reports through reliable witnesses], which is equal to the former.”
Halevi cites as items of history that were seen by a multitude of witnesses and therefore cannot be doubted: the splitting of the Red Sea, the revelation of the Decalogue, the writing of the Decalogue by God and the manna.
However, Halevi’s argument is illogical. Very few Jews, if any, are convinced that these events occurred due to a three-thousand-year-old recollection. Those who believe these miracles do so because they are recorded in the Bible. Judaism therefore cannot be set apart from other religions and from philosophy and shown to be true because Judaism is a historically proven religion.
Halevi’s second defense of Judaism is his theory of the uniqueness of the Jewish people. Halevi insists that the religious faculty was incorporated in the Jewish soul only. This faculty is activated when Jews observe Jewish rituals, making it possible for Jews to come into contact with God.
Only Jews, Halevi outrageously insists, were elected by God, are genetically superior and possess a supernatural character; non-Jews are subject to the hazardous risks of the laws of nature.
The following are his words:
“If the law were binding on us only because God created us [and therefore available to all], the white and the black man would be equal, since he created them all.”
