Rabbi Wise, FDR and the Bergson Group

Prof. Medoff does an outstanding job reviewing and explaining the problems that Rabbi Wise, the most important Jewish leader of the Hitler era, had to face and deal with. Perhaps the most controversial decision Rabbi Wise made was to accede to the request of the US Government to suppress (or delay the release of) the news about the extermination of the Jewish communities in Europe. Prof. Medoff does a fair job explaining the pros and cons of that decision. He explains the close relationship between Rabbi Wise and FDR, and why Rabbi Wise continued to support FDR even though he was repeatedly disappointed by FDR's failure to help save Jewish refugees or authorize military efforts to stop the killings, like bombing the tracks to the camps. In retrospect, it is fairly clear that Rabbi Wise was taken in by FDR, who had no intention to lift a finger to save the Jews of Europe. Prof. Medoff has written often, and well, about FDR's failure to help the Jewish refugees in Europe, and this book repeats much of that shameful history. He makes it clear that, although FDR often indicated to Rabbi Wise that he intended to take helpful steps, he had no intention of actually doing anything constructive. Nevertheless, Rabbi Wise continued to rely on FDR and implore him to help. But even as Rabbi Wise came to appreciate this, what alternative did he have but to keep trying?
Prof. Medoff has an additional agenda: he has long supported efforts to credit the Bergson Group and treat them as heroes. Again, there are pros and cons to this argument, but Prof. Medoff takes only one side. He points out that Rabbi Wise's decisions and actions failed to accomplish much, and assigns much blame for that failure to Rabbi Wise. But that is largely Monday morning quarterbacking and is unfair.. In reality, the Bergson Group did not accomplish much, either. At most, it contributed to the creation of the War Refugee Board, but that Board accomplished very little, and it is somewhat misleading to give the Bergson Group the major credit for its creation. As Prof. Medoff explains, it was largely forced on FDR by one attorney in the Treasury Department, who threatened to go public with the State Department's secret and illegal policies to prevent any assistance whatsoever to efforts to help Jews. The Bergson Group played no role in this.
.In retrospect, it is far from clear that there was any action of any sort that the Jewish community in the US could have taken that would have affected the ultimate outcome.
The book is worth reading for the purpose of understanding Rabbi Wise's actions and the pressures which he had to face.. But I have to subtract one star because I think the criticism of Rabbi's Wise's actions, and the unqualified praise for the Bergson Group, is not fully warranted by the facts.

Painful truths

This book pulls no punches and tells the story of how FDR took advantage of Rabbi Wise's naivite and even when confronted with the truth how Rabbi Wise chose not to believe his "friend" was deceiving him. The truths in this book cast both men in a whole new light. FDR was no friend to the Jewish people and Rabbi Wise was innocently complicit in covering up the truth about the Nazi death camps at the behest of his friend. Actually the rabbi assumed a friendship that did not exist.
